Research

Design research takes many forms. On a basic level, online research for competitor samples and reviews plus testing and observation are clear starting points. But, I’ve also studied the commercial preservation, transport, and ripening of bananas and the importance of managing ethaline gas throughout those processes. I’ve read scientific papers about air flow and resonance chambers to understand how to design a functional whistle ball dog toy. Really diving into a project requires an unrelenting curiosity and drive to find answers.

Sketch, CAD, and Build

Test

Refine and Repeat

I typically move back and forth between sketching and building throughout much of my early design process. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a prototype is worth a thousand pictures. I have found many times that the beautiful sketched idea has unforeseen problems when the attempt is made to transform it into a three dimensional reality.

Awarded Patents

I have been awarded numerous patents for innovative solutions to design problems throughout my career. Below is just a small sampling. Click on the image to view the patent.
